As a child, if someone had told me that trips with my mother to cemeteries and historical societies would have led to a lifelong passion of genealogy, I probably would have laughed loudly. See, I believed these were just efforts to keep my young inquisitive mind and nature busy. My mother was a professional genealogist, even before that terminology was commonplace. When she passed, I was left 40 boxes and 4 filing cabinets of research she did throughout her lifetime.
She had often said she was leaving me job of writing about my ancestors. And thus I've started to do just that. I want the writing to be something my ancestors can be proud of, done in the correct manner such that they understand where I found the information. But I also want to provide the stories from the letters, and work done by my parents. This process means that I have to ensure that the work they did is right, and in almost all cases this means not just reviewing their work, but double checking the facts, and in some instances finding documents they didn’t have access to as a result of what is now available online.
The result was a need for continuing genealogical education and participating in a variety of genealogical societies. Here is list of what I've participated in that provides me the skills to do your research:
